Natural Deodorant FAQs
-
Natural deodorants use plant-based and mineral ingredients to control odour, rather than synthetic chemicals. They don't block your pores or prevent sweating—instead, they neutralise odour-causing bacteria while allowing your body to perspire naturally.
Our Salt of the Earth natural deodorant range is certified COSMOS Natural by the Soil Association, meaning all ingredients are 100% naturally derived. The formulas include organic aloe vera to soothe skin, natural mineral salts for odour protection, and magnesium oil. The range is also Leaping Bunny approved (cruelty-free) and Vegan Society approved.

-
The application method of a natural deodorant rarely affects its ability to prevent body odour; it is simply a matter of personal preference. This is why Salt of the Earth natural deodorants are available in a wide range of formats.
-
Yes. As with all toiletries and skin care products, natural deodorants will have a shelf life or expiration date. The natural deodorants in the Salt of the Earth range are best used within 12 months of opening.
-
No. Unlike regular antiperspirants that work by blocking sweat glands and clogging pores with aluminium, natural deodorants work by combating the bacteria that break down sweat and cause the odour.
-
When switching from an aluminium-based deodorant to a natural alternative, your body may go through a detox period of 1-3 weeks, as your pores gradually lose the build-up of aluminium. This process can cause some additional sweating and odour which can sometimes lead to the incorrect belief that natural deodorant is ineffective. However, if you persevere, once your body has fully detoxified, the natural deodorant will be able to work effectively, and you will feel the full benefit.
-
Although aluminium free deodorants may not negatively affect mammograms, anything that leaves particles in the underarm area could potentially lead to inaccurate results, and so it is better not to apply anything to your underarms directly before an examination.
-
Deodorant and antiperspirant work in different ways:
Deodorant targets the bacteria that cause body odour when they interact with sweat. It doesn't stop you from sweating.
Antiperspirant contains aluminium compounds that temporarily block sweat ducts, reducing the amount you perspire.
Many people use the terms interchangeably, but they're distinct products designed for different purposes.
-
We all know that armpits get smelly when we sweat, but what you might not know is that it is not actually the sweat itself that smells. When we perspire, apocrine sweat breaks down and mixes with the bacteria on our skin, and it is this combination of bacteria plus apocrine secretions which causes the odour.
Aluminium Free Deodorant FAQs
-
No. Natural aluminium-free deodorants don't block your pores or sweat glands. Instead, they work by neutralising odour-causing bacteria on your skin's surface, allowing your body to sweat naturally.
-
Aluminium chlorohydrate and aluminium chloride are active ingredients commonly used in antiperspirants. These compounds work by temporarily blocking sweat ducts to reduce perspiration.
-
Potassium alum is a naturally occurring mineral salt with a long history of use in personal care. It has antimicrobial properties and has traditionally been used as an astringent and skin toner.
While potassium alum belongs to the same mineral family as aluminium chlorohydrate and aluminium chloride, it works differently. Rather than blocking sweat glands, potassium alum helps control odour by inhibiting bacterial growth on the skin.
-
"Aluminium-free deodorant" typically means free from aluminium chlorohydrate and aluminium chloride—the compounds used in antiperspirants to block sweat. Some aluminium-free deodorants, including the Salt of the Earth range, contain potassium alum, a natural mineral salt that works differently and doesn't prevent sweating.
-
Many people prefer aluminium-free deodorants because they want to allow their bodies to sweat naturally while still controlling odour. Some simply prefer products with fewer synthetic ingredients, while others find natural deodorants gentler on sensitive skin.

Our natural deodorants contain 100% natural ingredients including organically grown, skin soothing aloe vera, natural botanical extracts and essential oils, and minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and sodium bicarbonate. Paraben Free Deodorant FAQs
-
Parabens are a widely used preservative, added to skincare products and deodorants to prevent bacteria and mould growth.
-
It is believed that parabens can disrupt hormone function by mimicking oestrogen activity, and have been linked to hormone-related cancers such as breast cancer and early puberty in children. However, whilst it is thought that large quantities of the chemicals could cause these issues, the concentrations of parabens used in cosmetics and toiletries are only around 0.3% to 1%, which is considered too low to be capable of causing any ill effects.
From an industry authority perspective, the Cosmetics, Toiletries and Perfumery Association (CTPA) has stated: “Parabens are officially approved for use under the Cosmetics Directive (76/768/EEC), the European legislation that regulates all cosmetics and toiletries. We can reassure the public that all cosmetic and toiletry products containing parabens may continue to be used safely.”
Despite this declaration, many people still have doubts and concerns, which is why the entire Salt of the Earth range of deodorants is paraben free.
-
